This work is exploring the hidden history of women in computing and the connection between early programming and weaving. Before computers were machines, "computer" referred to people, often women, who performed complex calculations by hand. The project responds to the historical erasure of women's contributions to computing, from the women who programmed ENIAC, one of the first electronic computers, to those who handwove core memory for the Apollo missions, among many others. Using a loom for the first time, I approach weaving as both material practice and research process, while reflecting on my own experience as a woman in computer science engaging with textile practices.
I began exploring weaving, using the loom for the first time and combining the weaved piece with electronics, text and conductive yarn
